The Department of Computer Science offers the following research postgraduate programmes in both full-time and part-time modes:

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) 3-year Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) 4-year Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Candidates are required to follow an approved programme of study and research under the supervision of at least one supervisor. Results of research must be presented in the form of a thesis. Each candidate is required to take an oral examination on the subject matter of his/her thesis and perform satisfactorily before receiving the degree. A PhD candidate beyond the probation period is required to give a departmental seminar before thesis submission. Research publication is strongly encouraged.... [-]

Founded in 1981, the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at National Central University initially offered a graduate degree only. After offering a doctoral degree in 1988 and the undergraduate degree in 1992, the department quickly evolves and sets up a complete curriculum for computer science education and research. The department admits around 100 undergraduates, 100 students to the master program, 30 students to the part-time master program, and 25 students to the doctoral program each year. Our department has one of the most stringent academic programs in Taiwan.

The uniqueness of Our Ph.D. Program

Doctoral programs are fundamentally different from Bachelor's or Master's degree programs. Like other programs, doctoral students gain a base level of knowledge through coursework. The difference, however, comes with research. Whereas a Bachelor's or Master's student may undertake a research project, it merely provides a complement to the coursework and is clearly guided by a faculty advisor. Doctoral research is the focus of a doctoral student's studies. Doctoral research is much more self-guided and exploratory than research done in the other programs. Future employers typically select doctoral students on the quality and originality of their thesis research, not their grades in coursework. Reflecting this focus, the bulk of time and effort during a student's doctoral studies is spent on thesis research.... [-]
