Computer Science

One must accomplish two things when earning a PhD. First one must understand a particular subject thoroughly. Secondly, one must extensively in knowledge about that subject.

There are several fields that make up the broader field of computer science. One of these fields is the computational complexity theory, which can be very abstract. Other fields, such as computer graphics, deal more with concrete and hands-on visuals.

Italy, officially the Italian Republic, is a unitary parliamentary republic within the European Union, located in Southern Europe. To the north, it borders France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia along the Alps.

PhD in Computer Sciences

GSSI - Gran Sasso Science Institute
Campus Full time 4 years November 2018 Italy L'Aquila

The principled development of modern computing systems involves the modeling and management of the interactions between discrete and continuous phenomena, coping with heterogeneous networks efficiently and sustainably, the possibility to access potentially unlimited hardware and software resources, handling of uncertainty, and the need to elaborate in real time massive amounts of data. It is our tenet that meeting these challenges requires one to develop a multidisciplinary knowledge that must be founded on firm modeling and reasoning capabilities. Therefore, the main aim of our Ph.D. studies is to provide students with the opportunity to develop those capabilities and to apply them to research challenges in Computer Science. To this end, we offer our graduate students introductory courses that provide the necessary formal background and specialized courses that introduce students to the newest developments in the areas of Reactive Systems, Software Engineering, and Algorithmic Aspects of Computer and Social Networks. Ph.D. in Computer Science (PCS)

The “Ph.D. Programme in Computer Science” (PCS) is a Ph.D. programme offered by the graduate school of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics: Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS). PCS was created by the participating institutions of the Center for Computational Sciences and the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in 2005 with the mission to provide high-quality Ph.D. education on a high scientific level within three years. The PCS programme includes lectures, seminars, and methods courses. In addition, PCS encourages to participate in international conferences or workshops. PCS also emphasizes soft skills such as teamwork, problem-solving and moderation techniques. The Ph.D. candidates are obliged to take part in tutoring activities. Each PCS applicant needs to choose a research area from a computer science related research group, e.g. Center for Computational Sciences or Institute of Computer Science. Afterwards, a related supervisor from the list of eligible examiners needs to be found, which is normally one of the group leaders of the chosen research group.PCS is open to students from Germany and from abroad who hold a Master's degree in Computer Sciences (or equivalent). After the successful completion of the PCS programme, the international degree of Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) or alternatively the degree of Dr. rer. nat. (Doctor Rerum Naturalium) will be awarded.... [-]
