A Ph.D. by research is similar to a conventional Ph.D. but recognizes research work carried out by entrepreneurial companies and academic organizations that lead to novel and publishable results. A UNYP Ph.D. by research usually requires a minimum of three years, during which time there should be three publications, in literature approved by the University of Bolton. These publications should be in relation to the student's thesis and area of expertise and should develop the student’s knowledge of the subject. The award of this Ph.D. is based purely on these three published works and as such rewards on-going activities rather than additional work. -

The doctoral study program “Theology”, the branch of study “Hussite theology” with a standard length of study of four years prepares students for independent scientific research and independent creative activities in the area of theology. The branch of study enables students to specialize according to his or her individual study plan. The branch of study provides knowledge of hermeneutical approaches and applies them in the contemporary theological discourse and also in the dialogue with confessional approaches of other theological systems. The subject of the studies is a theological compendium interpreted in the course of the Hussite theology. The goal of the studies is a scientific preparation of first-rate experts that are capable of independent scientific work in the area of theology. The branch is simultaneously oriented to awareness of the fact that from the very beginning there is an effort to new understanding and a new interpretation of fundamental theological notions. Thereby the branch is in context with other concepts that were overcoming a metaphysical conception of the world. It deals with the key questions of the Christian belief and Christ present in this world. Students of the branch have got an opportunity to learn how the questions are practically manifested in the current social science of the church as well. -

The Graduate Study is organized by the Department of Physical and Macromolecular Chemistry in cooperation with a number of Institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (The Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry, Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Institute of Chemical Processes, etc.) and covers almost all fields of Physical Chemistry (including Biophysical Chemistry and Physical Chemistry of Polymers) and some disciplines of Chemical Physics. Due to the interdisciplinary character of the Department, there exist possibilities of combined graduate studies with biochemical, or macromolecular orientation, despite the fact that the Faculty of Science offers separate Graduate Studies both in Biochemistry and Macromolecular Chemistry. -

Analytical chemistry is a branch of natural science and is based not only on all the chemical disciplines but also on physics, biology, the theory of information and a number of technical disciplines. It provides information on the identity, structure, and amounts of components in natural and man-made objects and on their distribution in space and time. It cooperates with other fields of natural science in seeking relationships between the chemical composition of substances and their properties. It is an applied multidisciplinary science with a number of feedbacks that accents teamwork in the solution of problems. It requires mastering of sufficient background in a number of disciplines, such as general and physical chemistry, physics, mathematics, inorganic and organic chemistry and biochemistry, and, of course, a thorough knowledge of the theory of analytical chemistry and of modern instrumental analytical methods. In view of the experimental character of analytical chemistry, an important role is played by practical capabilities and manual skills. -

Students entering this program are trained in all fields of Biochemistry including bioenergetics, enzymology, molecular biology, protein chemistry and structure, immunochemistry, xenobiochemistry (biochemistry of foreign substances), chemical and cellular fundaments of the metabolic reactions etc. Students participating in the Program are actively involved in grant-supported research projects at the Department of Biochemistry of the Faculty of Science of Charles University Prague as well as in the collaborating laboratories at the Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic, and in regional and company laboratories. The studies in the Program are successfully completed after obtaining the English Language Certificate (issued by independent organizations), and after passing the State Doctoral Examination in biochemistry and two other subjects (usually suggested by the supervisor), and the defense of the Ph.D. Thesis the important part of which is at least one publication in international peer-reviewed journal at which the candidate must be the principal author. -

The field of botany covers all plant organismal sciences including mycology. Students typically specialize in one of the following fields: (i) systematics, distribution, and ecology of non-vascular plants (including fungi), (ii) biosystematics/experimental taxonomy, microevolution, phylogenetics a distribution of vascular plants, or (iii) plant ecology, vegetation science and landscape ecology (including paleoecology). The study encompasses training in modern methodological approaches, data analysis, and synthesis, and stresses participation in the scientific community, including the ability to present one's own results. Work on the Ph.D. project of the student is the core of the study. More information is available at the website of the Program Steering Committee (http://botany.natur.cuni.cz/cz/pgs/index.php). -

Demography is the scientific study of human population dynamics. It encompasses the study of the size, structure, and distribution of populations, and how populations change over time due to births, deaths, and migration including related events of marriages, divorces, and abortions. The relationships between economic, social, cultural, and biological environments and population development in terms of causes and effects (including forecasting) are the object of population studies in a broader sense. Demography compiles and analyzes data that are useful for various disciplines dealing with human populations such as economics, sociology, social medicine, anthropology, historiography, social geography, ecology, etc. Outcomes of demographic studies are important for public administration, policymaking, health service organization, educational system, insurance companies, etc. -
