Education specialisms - MPhil / PhD The MPhil/PhD in Education offers you an opportunity to study in detail a topic in the field of education that is of personal or professional interest. You will be supported by a first supervisor, who will offer specialised guidance, and a second supervisor, who will provide a more general overview of your studies. Depending on your qualifications and experience, you may register for an MPhil with the option to progress to a PhD or register for the PhD directly. As well as regular meetings with your supervisors, there will be an annual review of progress by means of a formal submission to the faculty’s research committee. The University also delivers a programme of seminars and workshops exploring approaches to research which you are encouraged to attend. There is also a student research forum which provides an opportunity to discuss with peers any aspect of research you want - students create the agenda. You will also be invited to deliver academic papers to faculty research events if you so wish. The Education element has an international reputation and staff are research active in a number of different areas. As can be seen from the selection of topics listed below, their interests are varied revealing a wide range of specialisms. In an area as wide as education there is an inevitable overlap of expertise, but in general terms, the real strengths are in literacy, numeracy, inclusion, e-learning and technical and vocational education. Research topics Your research topic is entirely your choice. When applying, there is an expectation you will have already begun to formulate a topic or area of study though at this initial stage how it will be conducted does not need to be explained in detail, your supervisor will advise and guide you on such elements as the design and methodology. The important consideration is that it is a substantial contribution to knowledge and should therefore be specific in its intent. The breadth of study is wide. A few examples of topics already being investigated at both MPhil and PhD level presently include: School exclusion (several projects) Primary school children English as a second language learning Responding to autism (several different projects) Community teaching in the health sector Free schools Greek secondary school curriculum development Adult access to numeracy learning Autism and literacy Autism and inclusion Czech Republic English workshops Degree study progress for first generation undergraduate students Levels of learning and engagement in degree level study Photographic representation of disability Zambian technical and vocational college provision Vocational diplomas A reappraisal of the LDD curriculum in an FE college The Individualised Curriculum The above only represents a small cross section of established topics presently being undertaken to provide an indication of the breadth of study supported. The University welcomes applications on any educational topic. We are however committed to providing a quality research experience, and if we feel we do not have the specialist academic background, we will refer you to another higher education institution.
