Engineering and Technology

The most popular doctorate is the Doctor of Philosophy or Ph.D. Ph.D.s and other study doctorates prepare graduate student to launch new plans that add to the common knowledge base of the field. Candidates for and holders of Ph.D.s often seek professions as professors and researchers, but many also go on to different roles in the charitable, public, and private sectors.

Students in the field of engineering technology receive an education that draws on the distinct fields of both engineering and technology. Engineering technologists use engineering design principles in technological applications to develop technology that can be used to solve practical problems.

Officially known as the Italian Republic, the country is found in southern Europe. The official language is Italian and the cultural rich capital is Rome. Many of the world's oldest universities are located in Italy, in particular the University of Bologna (founded in 1088). There are three Superior Graduate Schools with "university status", three institutes with the status of Doctoral Colleges, which function at graduate and post-graduate level.

The intensive, research oriented Ph.D. programme is taught by internationally respected scientists. It is designed for highly qualified students who have studied forestry, wood sciences, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry etc. To assure a high standard individual training, the number of participants in the programme is limited to 12 students per year.Within the PhD-programme every student mainly works on his or her special research project. He or she becomes part of one of these science groups and is supervised by one of the leading professors. According to the new study regulations each student has two additional tutors (professors) who usually become the co-examiners at the oral exam. PhD-students are entitled to suggest these two persons for this task. One of these persons can be a professor from another university. The students are expected to be able to work and research independently and finally present a major scientific contribution to their field of specialisation. Aside of research work successful applicants have to take part in lessons and practical courses which shall prepare them for leading management positions in the woodworking industry and in research institutes. All compulsory courses are taught in English. The programme is member of the "Georg-August University School of Science" (GAUSS).   Research Topics One major focus of the ongoing research lies on reducing the main technical disadvantages of wood in use: its limited resistance to fungi and insects, its disposition... PhD in Environmental informatics

Environmental informatics is understood to be an integrated subject consisting of bio-, eco-and geoinformatics in addition to scientific computing. By using the tools of informatics in this subject, anyone can study or model objects, structures, regulatory networks, processes (signals, materials and information flows) at various scales and integration levels. Under the umbrella of environmental informatics, the transfer of knowledge about biological, ecological and environmental systems and the system-orientated integration of such will be improved and promoted using modern methods and technology. This important integrative approach at the system level is effective due to the efficient academic and education-related measures set up with the establishment of the MSc and PhD programmes in environmental informatics and their embedment in GAUSS and in the research landscape Göttingen. The excellent biological, ecosystemic, environmental and mathematical research in Göttingen requires the establishment of a corresponding integrated Master and PhD programme in environmental informatics, from which important innovative scientific impulses and contributions can be expected.... PCS was created by the participating institutions of the Center for Computational Sciences and the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in 2005 with the mission to provide high quality PhD education on a high scientific level within three years. The PCS programme includes lectures, seminars, and methods courses. In addition, PCS encourages to participate in international conferences or workshops. PCS also emphasizes soft skills such as teamwork, problem solving and moderation techniques. The PhD candidates are obliged to take part in tutoring activities. Each PCS applicant needs to choose a research area from a computer science related research group, e.g. Center for Computational Sciences or Institute of Computer Science. Afterwards, a related supervisor from the list of eligible examiners needs to be found, which is normally one of the group leaders of the chosen research group.PCS is open to students from Germany and from abroad who hold a Master's degree in Computer Sciences (or equivalent). After the successful completion of the PCS programme, the international degree of PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) or alternatively the degree of Dr. rer. nat. (Doctor rerum naturalium) will be awarded....
