Compare 16 PhD Programs in Environmental Engineering
Generally taken as a follow-up to a master’s degree program, a PhD program generally takes years to complete, and once complete, distinguishes a graduate as a leading expert in a field related to science. With a PhD, scholars usually graduate with specialized skills which may help them find a career.
What is a PhD in Environmental Engineering? It’s a doctoral program with a focus on the environmental sciences. Students in this program receive specialized training in the major areas of natural sciences, including sustainable energy, geo-energy systems and natural engineering. Different courses students should expect to take while in the program may include environmental sustainability and renewable energy, sustainable transportation systems, hydrology and civil infrastructure materials and modeling. As a capstone of this program, scholars should expect to conduct and defend a dissertation to a panel of other industry experts, and they may be expected to complete an exam.
Graduates with a PhD in Environmental Engineering are generally knowledgeable about how to apply research studies in a practical environment. In addition to research skills, graduates should also have outstanding presentation, mathematical and organizational skills. These can help them when job hunting.
The cost to obtain a PhD can vary depending on how long it takes to complete a program at the individual school. Students should research costs to understand the complete breakdown and reach out to schools with any questions.
Those who earn their PhD in Environmental Engineering can expect to have a variety of jobs waiting for them upon graduation. Many environmental engineers spend a great deal of their time outdoors using their skills to conduct soil, groundwater and sustainable energy research to develop viable solutions to keep our planet healthy. Others work to improve upon public health concerns such as air pollution, waste disposal and recycling.

The Ph.D. degree program in Environmental Engineering- Air Pollution is a multidisciplinary program that involves the applications of scientific knowledge and engineering solution to control pollution and to provide clean air for the workers in industries. Air pollutants are a complex mix of chemicals emitted by human and natural sources and formed in the atmosphere such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, heavy metal trace species, volatile organic compounds, and hydrocarbons. Air pollution engineering consists of two major components, air pollution control, and air quality engineering. Air pollution control focuses on the fundamentals of air pollutant formation in process technologies and the identification of options for mitigating or preventing air pollutant emissions. Globally, air pollution is responsible for over four million premature deaths annually. Air quality engineering deals with large-scale, multi-source control strategies, with focus on the physics and chemistry of pollutant interactions in the atmosphere....

The Ph.D. degree program in Environmental Engineering- Environmental Planning is the advanced degree in Environmental planning and is focused on training students for research and teaching in the areas of environmental planning. Environmental planning is the application of natural and social science to promote environmentally sound development and management of natural resources. It is a broad field, bridging the disciplines of geology, soils, hydrology, plant and wildlife ecology, law, and public policy. The environmental planner plays a pivotal role providing a bridge between specialists and the decision makers. Much better land-use decisions will result if the decision makers are better informed about the environmental effects of alternative actions. Thus, the environmental planner pulls information together from various disciplines and presents it in a form comprehensible to decision makers. This involves working closely with specialists in interactions that draw upon the planner’s background in these specializations. At the regional planning scale, environmental planners analyze the landscape to identify constraints on land use. From these analyses, guidelines and regulations are developed to reduce losses from landslides, earthquakes, floods, forest fires, and other natural hazards.Environmental planners for the site planning review specific development proposals, acting as intermediaries between natural scientists and planning firms to inspire more creative and ecologically informed plans and to help mitigate the detrimental effects of development toward a sustainable one....

There is a growing concern for environmental conservation and sustainable development across the globe. To achieve long-term environmental sustainability, it requires innovative solutions to many problems caused by humans. These problems include the presence of micropollutants in drinking water, noxious aerosols and fumes in the air, heavy metals and toxic organics in solid wastes that will eventually overwhelm our landfill sites. The scarcity of water resources, the ever-deteriorating air quality in many metropolises, the threat of mounting volumes of waste without suitable disposal sites, and a long list of other critical issues must be resolved through the innovations of scientists and engineers....

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The Environmental Science and Engineering Program (EnSE) prepares students to work on many of the world’s most pressing challenges. There is a worldwide concern with the availability of clean water; EnSE examines methods to purify and reuse water, as well as to reduce contamination of existing reserves. The focus of the program is on examining the impact of humans on our environment through resource exploitation; including over-consumption, land degradation, and pollution of water. The results of these efforts may offer solutions to water scarcity, soil contamination.
This program comprises four tracks: Water Quality, Chemistry, and Treatment; Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology; Environmental Hydrology and Fluid Mechanics; and Materials for Environmental Science and Engineering.
Students entering the program enroll in a set of core courses and then take specialty courses in one of the three major tracks. The remaining courses are technical electives. The three tracks together cover the most important areas in Environmental Science and Engineering, and the core-plus specialty courses and electives will equip a student for a successful and productive career in these fields.
