The main focus of the program is understanding of the historical development of ecosystems before significant disturbances caused by human activities. The program accentuates a palaeological approach that corresponds very well with methods of a recent ecological research. The combination of both approaches allows recognizing the extent of the damage, the speed of their changes, and the resilience and recovery of ecosystems, too. This information is an important starting point for modern approaches in the nature conservation, which is the second area of the study program.
The graduate study comprises two parts: a study part and a research part. A plan of the study is prepared by the supervisor and should be approved by a committee.... [-]

The Environmental Science and Engineering Program (EnSE) prepares students to work on many of the world’s most pressing challenges. There is a worldwide concern with the availability of clean water; EnSE examines methods to purify and reuse water, as well as to reduce contamination of existing reserves. The focus of the program is on examining the impact of humans on our environment through resource exploitation; including over-consumption, land degradation, and pollution of water. The results of these efforts may offer solutions to water scarcity, soil contamination.
This program comprises four tracks: Water Quality, Chemistry, and Treatment; Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology; Environmental Hydrology and Fluid Mechanics; and Materials for Environmental Science and Engineering. Students entering the program enroll in a set of core courses and then take specialty courses in one of the three major tracks. The remaining courses are technical electives. The three tracks together cover the most important areas in Environmental Science and Engineering, and the core-plus specialty courses and electives will equip a student for a successful and productive career in these fields. The aim of the PhD study program is to train experts with deep knowledge of environmental and related chemical and biochemical disciplines, informatics and mathematical modeling. PhD studies build on this foundation and deepen knowledge in a wide scale of environmental areas such as analytical methods for monitoring the of water and air quality and soil contamination; technologies for drinking water production, wastewater treatment; sludge treatment, solid waste management, and soil decontamination technologies; removal of air pollutants. An important part of the study is also the prevention of all forms of waste, recycling and recovery as renewable resources. Students are trained in a solution of complex research projects.... [-]

The program reflects a general public demand to understand and analyze mechanisms of adverse changes to the environment and find ways to mitigate them.
The key aim of the study is a detailed analysis of the current state of the environment, identification of principal pollutants, their dynamics, transport processes, and transformation among the various environmental compartments.
An important aspect of the study is identification of biotic and abiotic processes, phenomena, species, and/or their groups (and their combinations) which may through the mediation of their state, behaviour or a certain mechanism assist in early recognition of an unwilling disruption of a given environmental system (air, water, soil, biota, etc.)....
