Best PhD Degrees in Finance in Sweden 2017. The SSE PhD program in Finance is a North American-style program with around 25 doctoral students. The course work part of the program is integrated in the Economics PhD Program: In the first one and a half semesters, finance PhD students take courses Mathematics, Econometrics, Micro- and Macroeconomics, all offered within the framework of the Stockholm Doctoral Program in Economics, Econometrics and Finance (SDPE). In the latter half of their second semester, students begin reading core finance courses. In their second year, students take further core finance courses and can choose among several shorter mini courses, covering more specialized area in finance. Alternatively, students may also take one or the other second-year PhD course in economics. In the second year, students also begin with their dissertation research under the supervision of an SSE faculty member. To help students find a dissertation subject some courses include term papers. The finance seminar series, of high international standard, is another source for discovering interesting research ideas. Presenting and discussing research at (internal) workshops - and possible conferences - is also considered an integral part of writing a dissertation. Students are expected to complete their thesis during their fourth or fifth year.
