With a Ph.D., individuals have access to a more advanced job market, greater career opportunities, and the ability to make more money in their career than individuals without an advanced degree.

So just what is a Ph.D. in Geography? Students must have first earned a bachelor’s degree and possibly a master’s degree before earning their doctorate. A Ph.D. can be earned in about four to six years, depending on the amount of time students are able to devote to their studies and if they are able to pass the necessary courses on time. Courses cover topics such as maps, theories and methods in geography, cultural and political geography, and research and analysis of geographical information. Students may be able to focus their geography degree on human geography, cartography, urban geography, or physical geography, among others.

There are several reasons why individuals may want to earn a Ph.D. in Geography. Students can improve their basic job skills, such as reading and writing, while also gaining a wealth of knowledge in their field and hands-on experience under the tutelage of experienced instructors.

The cost to earn a doctorate degree can vary depending on a variety of factors, including any previously earned higher education credits, the country of school, and the length of the academic program. Prospective students should contact schools about tuition, fees and scholarship opportunities.

Individuals who graduate with a Ph.D. in Geography often have a multitude of career choices available to them. Some graduates choose to work as city planners, others may find employment with environmental organizations, and still others may decide to become travel guides. Many graduates also choose to return to academia and join the faculty at an academic institution teaching classes in geography or other related fields.

Earning your Ph.D. can lead to a successful and profitable career in geography. To start earning your doctoral degree, first search for your program below and contact directly the admission office of the school of your choice by filling in the lead form.

PhD in General Issues in Geography

General Issues in Geography as a programme of doctoral studies constitute an effort to find the touching/intersected topics that link the previous programmes of doctoral studies. In fact, a rapid development of geographic fields in the past half a century brought about their exceptional differentiation, while the common denominator of the individual fields was weakened. The strengthening of mutual links between individual fields of geography constitutes a major task both for further development of geography as a science and the fulfilling of the urgent needs of society. This is associated with the fact that the current landscape, as a focus of geographical study, is undergoing major changes both on the local and regional levels, as well as the state, continental and global levels. However, its research is primarily materialised within specialised disciplines. As a result, an interconnection of differing aspects of crucial questions of the research into the interaction of nature and society and the enhancement of holistic approaches to the solution of problems is becoming urgently needed. The crucial problems should be not only studied, but also represented in the educational process as its integrating parts. It is just geography on elementary and secondary schools (as well as a number of non-geographic programmes of universities) that should play the corresponding integrating role of an umbrella field. The misunderstanding of this integrating potential of geography by the drafters of the curricular reform of the Czech education and the traditional division of sciences/subjects/disciplines into social and natural science spheres can also...
