With a Ph.D., individuals have access to a more advanced job market, greater career opportunities, and the ability to make more money in their career than individuals without an advanced degree.

So just what is a Ph.D. in Geography? Students must have first earned a bachelor’s degree and possibly a master’s degree before earning their doctorate. A Ph.D. can be earned in about four to six years, depending on the amount of time students are able to devote to their studies and if they are able to pass the necessary courses on time. Courses cover topics such as maps, theories and methods in geography, cultural and political geography, and research and analysis of geographical information. Students may be able to focus their geography degree on human geography, cartography, urban geography, or physical geography, among others.

There are several reasons why individuals may want to earn a Ph.D. in Geography. Students can improve their basic job skills, such as reading and writing, while also gaining a wealth of knowledge in their field and hands-on experience under the tutelage of experienced instructors.

The cost to earn a doctorate degree can vary depending on a variety of factors, including any previously earned higher education credits, the country of school, and the length of the academic program. Prospective students should contact schools about tuition, fees and scholarship opportunities.

Individuals who graduate with a Ph.D. in Geography often have a multitude of career choices available to them. Some graduates choose to work as city planners, others may find employment with environmental organizations, and still others may decide to become travel guides. Many graduates also choose to return to academia and join the faculty at an academic institution teaching classes in geography or other related fields.

Earning your Ph.D. can lead to a successful and profitable career in geography. To start earning your doctoral degree, first search for your program below and contact directly the admission office of the school of your choice by filling in the lead form.

Applied geology with specializations of geology of mineral deposits, engineering geology, hydrogeology, applied geophysics, environmental geology, and geochemistry is focused on study and the use of the rock environment and its protection.

Engineering Geology

Engineering geology applies the geological knowledge in design and construction in all branches of civil engineering, in mining and in urban planning. It is an interdisciplinary field in between science and technology. Using technical or rather mathematical methods, the knowledge gained by geology is applied in analyzing geodynamic processes and the interaction between the rock and civil engineering structures.

The subject of study is the geographical organization of society and its development. The courses on offer are particularly concerned with the following themes: analytical and synthetic evaluation of the system of settlement and the process of urbanization; hierarchical organization of regions; territorial differentiation of social and economic phenomena and identification of the role of their conditioning factors.

In terms of its applied dimension, this study relates to problems of regional development, administrative division and locational aspects of various socio-economic phenomena. Special importance is ascribed to the study of the interaction between society and its environment including related problems of social ecology.... [-]

Geological sciences with the emphasis on stratigraphical and historical geology, structural geology, paleobotany, zoo-paleontology, mineralogy and crystallography, geochemistry, economic geology and geology of mineral deposits, and petrology.

Stratigraphical and Historical Geology

Follows the studies of geological processes in the history of the Earth with the emphasis on organic and inorganic features. It is employed in a broad range of geological sciences (including the reconstruction of the geological environment in the past with the implications for the recent). The discipline deals with lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, and chronostratigraphy, especially in regional studies and correlation. It uses methods of the facies analysis as well as basin analysis in the paleogeographic reconstruction. It applies paleontological methods for the paleoecology, eco-stratigraphy, and quantitative stratigraphy, climatic stratigraphy, and event stratigraphy. The discipline uses geochronological methods radiometric dating and deals with the stratigraphical position of metamorphic and magmatic rocks. It employs the methods of detail studies of geological sections and deals with the research of Quaternary sediments.... [-]

General Issues in Geography as a program of doctoral studies constitute an effort to find the touching/intersected topics that link the previous programs of doctoral studies. In fact, a rapid development of geographic fields in the past half a century brought about their exceptional differentiation, while the common denominator of the individual fields was weakened.

The strengthening of mutual links between individual fields of geography constitutes a major task both for further development of geography as a science and the fulfilling of the urgent needs of society. This is associated with the fact that the current landscape, as a focus of geographical study, is undergoing major changes both on the local and regional levels, as well as the state, continental and global levels. However, its research is primarily materialized within specialized disciplines. As a result, an interconnection of differing aspects of crucial questions of the research into the interaction of nature and society and the enhancement of holistic approaches to the solution of problems is becoming urgently needed.... The post-graduate study subject "Physical Geography" links up with the magister study subject of the same name. In its specializations, the post-graduate study subject covers the whole spectrum of physical geography:

It develops individual basic scientific disciplines studying partial subsystems of the landscape sphere: Geomorphology and Palaeogeography of the Quaternary, Climatology, and Meteorology, Hydrology, Biogeography, Pedogeography, and Geoecology. It is concerned with the synthesis of the geographical environment, ensured by complex physical geography. Besides the relations between natural components of the geographical environment, it also covers interactions of physical-geographical and social-economic spheres. Demography is the scientific study of human population dynamics. It encompasses the study of the size, structure, and distribution of populations, and how populations change over time due to births, deaths, and migration including related events of marriages, divorces, and abortions. The relationships between economic, social, cultural, and biological environments and population development in terms of causes and effects (including forecasting) are the object of population studies in a broader sense. Demography compiles and analyzes data that are useful for various disciplines dealing with human populations such as economics, sociology, social medicine, anthropology, historiography, social geography, ecology, etc. Outcomes of demographic studies are important for public administration, policymaking, health service organization, educational system, insurance companies, etc....
