Geology

The most popular doctorate is the Doctor of Philosophy or Ph.D. Ph.D.s and other study doctorates prepare graduate student to launch new plans that add to the common knowledge base of the field. Candidates for and holders of Ph.D.s often seek professions as professors and researchers, but many also go on to different roles in the charitable, public, and private sectors.

Europe is the sixth largest continent and includes 47 countries and assorted dependencies, islands and territories. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the south, Asia to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the West.

PhD in Applied Geology

Charles University Faculty of Science
Campus Part time 4 years September 2017 Czech Republic Prague

A graduate of the Applied Geology Ph.D. program has acquired deep knowledge in the field of engineering geology focused on theoretical and experimental soil and rock mechanics as well as geotechnical mathematical modelling. [+]

Top Part time Doctoral Degrees in Geology in Europe. Applied geology with specializations of geology of mineral deposits, engineering geology, hydrogeology, applied geophysics, environmental geology and geochemistry is focused on study and the use of the rock environment and its protection. ENGINEERING GEOLOGY Engineering geology applies the geological knowledge in design and construction in all branches of civil engineering, in mining and in urban planning. It is an interdisciplinary field in between the science and technology. Using technical or rather mathematical methods, the knowledge gained by geology is applied in analyzing geodynamic processes and the interaction between the rock and civil engineering structures. HYDROGEOLOGY Hydrogeology is a scientific field engaged in groundwaters, their origin, conditions of incidence, laws of movement, their regimes, physical and chemical properties, their interaction with rocks, surface water and atmosphere. Hydrogeology ranges among applied geological branches and has closest relation to engineering geology. Modern hydrogeology has the character of a cross-border scientific discipline at the margin between geology, hydraulics, hydrology, chemistry and several technological disciplines (water management, civil engineering, chemical technology of water treatment etc.).A necessary method of modern hydrogeology is the development and use of mathematical models simulating natural processes as well as artificial interventions in the regime of waters both in saturated and unsaturated zones. The contents of the hydrogeology of today is moving from simple searching for water resources to the determination of optimum conditions of their utilization and protection. Hydrogeology plays an irreplacable role in the field of the protection of the... [-]

PhD in Geology

Charles University Faculty of Science
Campus Part time 4 years September 2017 Czech Republic Prague

A student of the Ph.D. program in Geology has acquired deep knowledge in the field of general geology, focused on the geological mapping of sedimentary, volcanic and metamorphic rocks; in the field of palaeontology focused on systematic, classification and stratigraphic applicability of plant and animal fossils. [+]

Geological sciences with the emphasis on stratigraphical and historical geology, structural geology, paleobotany, zoopaleontology, mineralogy and crystallography, geochemistry, economic geology and geology of mineral deposits, and petrology. STRATIGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL GEOLOGY Follows the studies of geological processes in the history of the Earth with the emphasis on organic and inorganic features. It is employed in broad range of geological sciences (including the reconstruction of geological environment in the past with the implications for the recent). The discipline deals with lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy and chronostratigraphy especially in the regional studies and correlation. It uses methods of the facies analysis as well as basin analysis in the paleogeographic reconstruction. It applies paleontological methods for the paleoecology, ecostratigraphy and quantitative stratigraphy, climatic stratigraphy and eventstratigraphy. The discipline uses geochronological methods radiometric dating and deals with the stratigraphical position of metamorphic and magmatic rocks. It employs the methods of detail studies of geological sections and deals with the research of Quaternary sediments. STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY In order to study the geological features (structures) of different scales it follows the scale sequences from the structures of mineral grains and rocks, outcrop structures ad structures expressed in the geological maps, global lithospheric structures and planetary structures. The emphasis of the structural geological studies is on the relationships among the structures and methods of their studies (deformation or strain analysis, methods of physical and mathematical models . The discipline provides a complex overview and applications of structural research in geological sciences using contemporaneous and up to date state of... [-]

PhD in Physical Geography and Geoecology

Charles University Faculty of Science
Campus Part time 4 years September 2017 Czech Republic Prague

A graduate of the Ph.D. study program has obtained the following knowledge: an extensive base in general geography and solid theoretical knowledge of physical geography as a whole. The graduate has deep theoretical knowledge in his/her specialization, as well as in some of the branches of physical geography (geomorphology, climatology, hydrology, pedogeography, biogeography, geoecology) or their combination. [+]

Top Part time Doctoral Degrees in Geology in Europe. The post-graduate study subject "Physical Geography" links up with the magister study subject of the same name. In its specializations, the post-graduate study subject covers the whole spectrum of physical geography: a) It develops individual basic scientific disciplines studying partial subsystems of the landscape sphere: Geomorphology and Palaeogeography of the Quaternary, Climatology and Meteorology, Hydrology, Biogeography, Pedogeography and Geoecology. b) It is concerned with synthesis of the geographical environment, ensured by complex physical geography. Besides the relations between natural components of the geographical environment, it also covers interactions of physical-geographical and social-economic spheres. Description of the entrance examination and evaluation criteria The entrance examination has one round and is held as an interview. In exceptional cases, requested in writing by 30 April 2017, the dean can permit entrance examinations to take place via information and communication technology. During the entrance examination the candidate must demonstrate technical and linguistic skills to study the given field along with attributes necessary for scientific work. The entrance examination also takes into account the interest of the candidate in pursuing specific doctoral work with a particular supervisor and the candidate’s ability to handle this topic. The maximum score of the examination is 100 points. Conditions for admission Submission of a properly completed application, including prescribed appendices, and payment of the application fee by 30 April 2017. Completion of a master’s program of study at a university documented by a notarized copy of a diploma or certificate... [-]
