Doctor of Philosophy in Theological Studies The Doctor of Philosophy in Theological Studies subscribes to the AIU philosophy of education. However, the distinct needs of doctoral students require additional approaches to learning. Learning is at best holistic, collaborative, personal, sustained development that is contextualized in its matrix culture; in African Society, since group consensus is frequently valued higher than individual opinion, reflection needs to seek new consensus, and the learning community is the natural locus for this to occur. This program seeks to maximize these characteristics of learning. The Doctor of Philosophy in Theological Studies curriculum applies this philosophy to the programme. Individual students pursue their learning within a learning community. Students may be admitted in cohorts or as individuals and each cohort, and individuals together with the faculty will form a collaborative learning community during the period of study. Students’ ideas and reflections on issues are discussed and sharpened as they plan and do the research and dissertation during the dissertation cycle. Given the mission of AIU, the program seeks to cultivate and form leaders who engage in theological reflection integrated with social sciences so that theory may inform practice and vice-versa. This integration of theology and social sciences empowers the learners to be able to scrutinize contemporary theological discourses and help African Christians to developed contextual theologies and theological models that fit their contexts, respond to them constructively, and suggest alternatives rooted in fresh examinations of... Doctor Of Ministry The Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) is an advanced, professional theological degree for pastors and other Christian leaders in church, non-governmental organizations, and mission communities. In keeping with the vision of AIU-ISAR-NEGST, this program seeks to address itself to the unique needs and opportunities of ministry in the African context. Designed primarily as in-service continuing education for working pastors, it seeks to integrate the wisdom of ministry experience with the highest levels of theological reflection. This process involves a series of modular seminars, year-round reading and writing assignments, and mentoring, culminating in a publishable ministry-based research dissertation. Distinctive values of the Doctor of Ministry 1.MISSIONAL --The D.Min program focuses on equipping Christian leaders in church, non-governmental organizations, and mission communities to confidently, to constructively, and to effectively carry out the mission of the gospel of Jesus Christ in an increasingly inter-connected world. We believe we must reconfigure leaders into reflective practitioners who understand the complexities of this inter-connected world and know how to engage it for the sake of the mission of the gospel 2.THEOLOGICAL -- The degree program seeks to cultivate and form Christian leaders who engage in theological reflection that informs practice and vice-versa. We call this type of theologically aware leader a “reflective practitioner.” These leaders possess a “thick understanding” of African and global culture and the “mission of God.” 3.IN-SERVICE or MID-CAREER TRAINING: The D.Min. is “In-Service or Mid-Career” training, and therefore deliberately experientially grounded education. Both instructors and learners bring a background that... [-]

PhD in Inter-religious Studies The Doctor of Philosophy in Inter-religious Studies is an advanced research-based, highly individualized course of study in a specialized area of religions beyond Master of Arts (or Master of Divinity) in Intercultural Studies (including Missions Studies and World Christianity). The focus of the programme is to prepare candidates mostly in the African setting for teaching, leadership, and administration in public and private Christian organizations pertaining to critical issues of religions. Goal of the programme The PhD in Inter-religious Studies is driven by a growing need to prepare, at the highest level, Christian practitioners, teachers, and researchers for public and private institutions of higher learning and research with regard to world religions and inter-religious relations. After successfully completing the training through the programme, they will also be able in turn to help regional or local religious practitioners and institutional teachers of religions with theories and practices from current knowledge and research in world religions and inter-religious affairs.
