Cultural and Historical Geography is a distinctive, internationally-renowned research theme within the School of Geography. Research in this area is shaped by, and has shaped, wider developments in the arts, humanities and social sciences. Research combines sustained engagement with empirical material with commitment to theoretical innovation, and demonstrates the geographical and historical diversity of subject matter with cultural and historical geography. The PhD course is followed mainly by supervised independent study. You will produce a thesis under the supervision of a member of staff with expertise in the area chosen (the Director of Studies). Additional support is available from a secondary supervisor, and/or an external supervisor at another institution. A programme of related studies that may involve formal taught courses is agreed with the director of studies each year. For non-solicited applications you will determine the broad topic to be investigated, with more specific details being determined via discussions with the Director of Studies. At the start of the course you will be encouraged to broaden your research training by attending sessions from the MSc Psychology course (this does not incur any extra tuition fees). Throughout your period of study, you will be encouraged to present your work to internal audiences via a school seminar series, and to external academic audiences at relevant conferences. Submission of papers to academic journals is also encouraged. By these means the school aims to produce doctorate-level graduates who are fully integrated into the academic community upon graduation.
