Life Sciences

The PhD is a doctoral degree, specifically called a "doctor of philosophy" degree. This is misleading because PhD holders are not necessarily philosophers (unless they earned their degree in philosophy!). That said, PhD recipients are able to engage in thought experiments, reason about problems, and solve problems in sophisticated ways.

Biological & life sciences studies often prepare students for a career in healthcare. Sometimes programs will combine human biology classes with classes in physics, chemistry, and even geology to help students learn how living organisms work together.

There are more than four thousand higher education organizations in Europe, from leading research institutions to small, teaching-focused universities. Europe itself is not as much different than other continents, reaching from the Arctic Circle to the coast of Africa.

The PhD curriculum in Theory and Simulation of Condensed Matter is suited to highly motivated students interested in learning how the microscopic constituents of matters self- assemble to bring about the whole complexity of the states of matter, from molecules to complex solids, and in learning how to model fascinating macroscopic phenomena, from friction to superconductivity and superfluidity, emerging from the collective behaviour of those microscopic agents.

During the first year of their PhD course, students acquire the most advanced tools for modelling and studying states of matter, from ab-initio simulation of real materials and molecules to quantum simulation of lattice models, from the classical statistical theory of many-body systems to its quantum counterpart, and acquaint themselves with the broad research activity carried out at SISSA through more focused and topical courses. This preliminary stage provides students with a common background and all the information they need to decide on the research topic they intend to pursue in their PhD thesis.... [-]

PhD in Physics and Chemistry of Biological Systems

Understanding the working principles of living organisms and soft matter systems from the basic equations ruling the dynamics of atoms and molecules was considered science fiction until a few years ago, and biophysics was almost unanimously considered a battlefield for phenomenologists. Nowadays, applying rigorous physics to biological processes is no longer a dream. What’s more, it is becoming clear that the next few decades will be the golden age for the “theory of life”, which is expected to undergo the same accelerating growth experienced by other physics disciplines in the past century.

Young scientists attracted by the opportunity to develop and apply concepts, models and methods to explore the still uncharted territory of quantitative biology can take up this challenge in our Ph.D. programme in Physics and Chemistry of Biological Systems.... [-]

The international programme on Wood Biology and Technology is a three-year study which leads to a Doctoral degree. The intensive, research-oriented Ph.D. programme is taught by internationally respected scientists. It is designed for highly qualified students who have studied forestry, wood sciences, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry etc. To assure a high standard individual training, the number of participants in the programme is limited to 12 students per year.Within the PhD-programme every student mainly works on his or her special research project. He or she becomes part of one of these science groups and is supervised by one of the leading professors. According to the new study regulations, each student has two additional tutors (professors) who usually become the co-examiners at the oral exam. PhD-students are entitled to suggest these two persons for this task. One of these persons can be a professor at another university. The students are expected to be able to work and research independently and finally present a major scientific contribution to their field of specialization. Aside from research work successful applicants have to take part in lessons and practical courses which shall prepare them for leading management positions in the woodworking industry and in research institutes. All compulsory courses are taught in English. The programme is a member of the "Georg-August University School of Science" (GAUSS).... [-]
