A PhD, or Doctor of Philosophy, is an advanced degree that takes about four years to complete. Available in a variety of fields, most programs involve a lot of research into a specific topic, and a final thesis.

What is a PhD in Marketing Communication? In this program, students research multidisciplinary approaches to advertising and marketing. Every program varies, but some may focus on socially responsible advances in the areas of digital communication, branding issues, corporate marketing, marketing relationships, social marketing, and stakeholder marketing. Most programs may combine organized classes, such as theories of society and epistemology of the social sciences, with individual research work. Along with writing a doctoral thesis, students may be required to author an academic article.

Earning a PhD can benefit the student by opening more doors of career opportunities. Holding an advanced degree also may give graduates a competitive edge in the marketplace and qualify them for higher pay.

When deciding on which school to attend, cost is usually a big factor. Because tuition and fees differ from one institution to another, students are encouraged to contact schools directly. Along with asking about financial requirements, students may want to inquire about financial aid opportunities such as grants, scholarships, and student loans.

There is a number of careers that graduates with this degree may qualify for. Opportunities may be found in areas of research or management. Some job titles may include advertising account executive, research analyst, marketing consultant, media relations specialist, media brand advisor, and social media manager. Employers may come from a variety of areas such as business, government, academia, non-government organizations, and industry.
