Description of the entrance examination and evaluation criteria entrance examination: one-round examination, interview discussion on the dissertation proposal (discussion on the dissertation topic and assessment of the applicant’s aptitude): 0–30 points; assessment of the applicant’s previous studies, research and other academic activities: 0–15 points; examination of subject-related literature (based on the applicant’s reading list): 0–15 points. The PhD Programme Board does not offer specific topics for Ph.D. candidates. Candidates can choose their topics freely. However, they should be aware of the primary fields of interests of the members of the Department of Logic, i.e. nonclassical logics, set theory, metamathematics, and interactions between these fields, including the historical aspects. Each PhD student should have a qualified supervisor committed to close cooperation with the student, a member of the PhD Programme Board or a researcher whom the Board finds eligible. Topics outside the fields of interests of the members of the department must first be discussed with the Chair of the Programme Board. PhD Degrees in Natural Sciences in Europe 2017. The Graduate Study is organized by the Department of Physical and Macromolecular Chemistry in cooperation with a number of Institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (The Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry, Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Institute of Chemical Processes, etc.) and covers almost all fields of Physical Chemistry (including Biophysical Chemistry and Physical Chemistry of Polymers) and some disciplines of Chemical Physics. Due to the interdisciplinary character of the Department, there exist possibilities of combined graduate studies with biochemical, or macromolecular orientation, despite the fact that the Faculty of Science offers separate Graduate Studies both in Biochemistry and Macromolecular Chemistry. According to the up-to-date trends in Physical Chemistry, the following fields in the Graduate Program have been developed, e.g.: (a) dynamics and kinetics of physical and chemical processes (the conformation and relaxation dynamics of molecules, clusters and macromolecules - studied both experimentally a by computer simulations, etc.), (b) statistical thermodynamics of low-molar-mass liquids and macromolecular assemblies (theoretical studies of the equilibrium phase behavior in combination with Monte Carlo simulations), (c) the up-to-date electromigration separation methods aimed to lifesciences (high-performance capillary electrophoretic techniques for separation of biologically important molecules like DNA and proteins, etc.), and (d) biophysical chemistry (the structure-function relationships of biological molecules and supramolecular structures). The graduate study in Chemical Physics is most focused on either (a) quantum chemistry (the accurate ab initio calculations of characteristics of small molecules, and the semiempirical calculations of properties of molecular assemblies and calculations of weak intermolecular interactions), or (b) spectroscopy (theoretical studies of the surface-enhanced Raman scattering and its application in the study of biologically active molecules, the time-resolved fluorometry studies of fast processes at the molecular level, etc.). A great variety of other topics is available for students working partially at the Faculty and partially in various Institutes of the Academy of Sciences. The Graduate Program has been developed in cooperation with experts from the Academy of Sciences and the Prague Institute of Chemical Technology. To secure a successful professional career for the graduates, the offer of individual research topics reflects the recent trends in the free positions advertized by research institutions and chemical companies in the Czech Republic and in the European Community countries. Description of the entrance examination and evaluation criteria The entrance examination has one round and is held as an interview. In exceptional cases, requested in writing by 30 April 2017, the dean can permit entrance examinations to take place via information and communication technology. During the entrance examination the candidate must demonstrate technical and linguistic skills to study the given field along with attributes necessary for scientific work. The entrance examination also takes into account the interest of the candidate in pursuing specific doctoral work with a particular supervisor and the candidate’s ability to handle this topic. The designer's programs lead to a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng degree). These programs are given under the banner of the Stan Ackermans Institute. Genetics and insurance risk Advances in human genetics, and medical sciences in general, have led to many gene discoveries; a number of single-gene disorders have been successfully identified and studied in detail. Researchers are now increasingly focusing on common multifactorial genetic disorders such as cancer, heart attack and stroke, caused by interaction of genes and environmental factors. It is important for the insurance industry to understand the full implications of these latest developments. First, can an insurer justify charging different premium rates to different risk groups? Second, if insurers are not allowed to discriminate between individuals based on their genes, by regulation or by law, is there a risk of adverse selection? From a public policy perspective, regulators and governments face the dilemma of whether to regulate against genetic underwriting or to allow market economies to take their own course. On one hand, there is a moral obligation not to discriminate against individuals for their genetic make-up. On the other hand, risk of adverse selection against insurance firms cannot be ruled out altogether. Maintaining an appropriate balance between the two is key. Economic capital and financial risk management Financial services firms are in the business of accepting risks on behalf of their customers. Customers do not always have the time or expertise to handle financial risks on their own, so they pass these on to financial services firms. However, even the most reputable firms can sometimes get it wrong, so it is fundamentally important for all stakeholders that financial services firms hold an appropriate amount of capital calculated on a robust scientific basis, to back the risks they are running. Economic capital can provide answers by specifying a unifying approach to calculating risk-based capital for any firm in the financial services sector. Currently, there is a consensus that a comprehensive understanding of the planet’s natural system does not suffice. It is necessary to understand the complex interactions between the socio-economic system and the vital planetary systems providing societies with ecosystems and natural services. The Environmental Studies doctoral study program contributes to the development of the environmental approaches characteristic of their interdisciplinary nature. The goal of the Environmental Studies doctoral program is the advancement of knowledge which should contribute to the creation of a theoretical base for the strategy of making economic, social and cultural development sustainable, especially from an environmental perspective. The following scientific directions have been defined for the study program: - Socio-economic metabolism. - Natural services. - Relationships between health and environment. - Application of sociological and economic approaches aimed at addressing environmental issues and sustainable development. - Research topics applying environmental economics. - Socially urgent issues of public policy of sustainable development. - Legal aspects of relationships towards the environment. - Environmentally inspired topics from the perspective of philosophy, anthropology and history. - Indicators of the relationship between the environment and human activities. - Education for sustainable development. Students can come up with their own ideas for topics for doctoral training or may use topics provided by supervisors. The objective of the doctoral program Environmental Studies is to provide, in the above mentioned domains, the concept of sustainable development with support in the form of scientifically conducted research. An important aspect of the program is the interdisciplinary character of the defined research domains and the synergies among them. Although it is not the main goal of the study, we assume that the research outputs could be an important source of scientifically validated information for objective, relevant and qualified decision-making on environmental aspects of the economic and social development of the Czech Republic. Description of the entrance examination and evaluation criteria Entrance examination includes: - Debate on the proposed topic for thesis. The project must be prepared together with a tutor and contain the proposal of the tutor (name), selected from the list of tutors approved by the Program Council (dissertation project - max. 12 points). - Examination of the knowledge of necessary basics in the natural sciences needed for the study of the environment and examination of knowledge in the social sciences, including economics (max. 4 points). - Examination on English language proficiency (max. 4 points). At the admission exam the applicants will present their proposals for doctoral training, focusing mainly on a) the current state of knowledge on the subject, b) the formulation of the research question/s or hypotheses, c) research methods, d) research timetable, e) possibilities of publication. The proposal may be further refined/elaborated in comparison with the version included within the submitted application, preferably in cooperation with the prospective supervisor who confirms his/her consent with the training of the applicant. Conditions for admission Admission conditions includes: 1. To enter the admission process, a completed application for doctoral studies must be submitted by 30.4.2017 at latest, including the following attachments: A brief professional biography; Documents certifying a completed higher-education studies at the masters level (applicants who complete their masters studies after the application deadline have to document the completion of their studies by 30.9.2017 at the latest); Proposal of a topic for doctoral training (description of the thesis topic, goals, methods, a list of most relevant sources, research timetable, explanation of the project relatioship to the environmental research topics). It is supposed, that the student will discuss the theme of the disertation beforehand so that the theme will conform to the research program of the training institution; Other documents worthy of attention (e.g. overview of applicant’s publications to date, proof of scientific practice at home or abroad, proof of English language exam, etc.). 2. Proof of completion of university studies in a master’s degree program. 3. Defence of the project of applicant's thesis (submitted as a part of the study application). 4. Information on the exercise of graduates Graduates of the program know the principles and methods of scientific work. Thanks to being trained in the research methodology of at least two subjects, they are capable of relatively greater insight into interdisciplinary-based problems and they are better equipped to resolve them, which we consider an important added value of the Environmental Studies program. The range of expertise of the Environmental Studies doctoral program graduates is determined by the interdisciplinary nature of the studies, which focuses on environmental issues and issues regarding the dynamics of the relationships between the society and natural systems. The basis for the graduates is the specialization they obtained in their undergraduate degrees of studies. This specialization is developed within the doctoral studies in such a way that the graduates eventually: acquire in-depth knowledge of the theoretical bases of the scientific areas, they are applying while writing their doctoral theses, know the broad context of the environmental issues their dissertation is focusing on, develop a deep understanding of the methodology of all scientific areas they are applying while working on their dissertations. This knowledge is considered an essential prerequisite for interdisciplinary dialogue and research. Graduates will be qualified for positions at academic institutions, even at universities abroad. Moreover, graduates are able to take the position of scientists in institutions fully focused on research and development in the broad area of subjects related to the environment and sustainable development, e.g. at various institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Examples of possible research areas include environmental economics, environmental sociology, the research and use of sustainability indicators etc. Furthermore, graduates can seek jobs in research institutions abroad. An extremely important outcome is the ability of graduates to hold decision-making positions in public administration, the business sphere and NGOs, where the work has impact on the environment. As for the public sector, this includes positions in central administrative bodies, especially ministries and their advisory expert or executive offices; positions in public administration at the regional or lower level. Jobs can also be possibly found in administrative bodies of the European Commission, the United Nations, the OECD and other multilateral international organizations. In the business sector graduates can find employment in companies, whose business has a direct impact on the environment. They can also find opportunities in companies and organizations providing expert services directly focused on the environment, such as land planning, planning for Territorial System of Ecological Stability, EIA, SEA, as well as more recently the Sustainability Impact Assessment.
