PhD in Quantum Optics and Optoelectronics

Charles University Faculty of Mathematics and Physics
Campus Part time 4 years September 2017 Czech Republic Prague

The graduate of the doctoral programme in physics–quantum optics and optoelectronics possesses not only deep knowledge in the specialization of the thesis but also a broader theoretical and experimental experience in the whole field. [+]

Subject entrance examination The subject entrance examination takes the form of a discussion about the chosen study programme and the intended doctoral thesis topic. The committee judges the applicant's interest in the field, motivation, expertise, and overall readiness for doctoral studies. The level of knowledge expected is that required for passing the state final examination of the corresponding master's study programme and branch at Charles University. The applicant must demonstrate his/her insight into the basic areas of science relevant to the chosen thesis topic. The committee also takes into account documents submitted with the application, namely the statement by the proposed advisor, by the head of the proposed training department, recommendation letters, CV, and the letter of motivation. Language entrance examination The language entrance examination verifies that you have an adequate command of the English language, i.e. at least at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Conditions for admission Admission for studies You will be admitted for studies if you have completed a Master degree programme, successfully pass (or get a waiver of) the subject and language entrance examination, and if an advisor in the required study programme is available. Information on the exercise of graduates The graduate of the doctoral programme in physics–quantum optics and optoelectronics possesses not only deep knowledge in the specialization of the thesis but also a broader theoretical and experimental experience in the whole field. Having gained experience in international cooperation, and mastered modern technologies and computing, the graduates... [-]

PhD Program in Optometry and Vision Science

University of Minho - School of Sciences
Campus 3 years October 2017 Portugal Braga

The PhD Program in Optometry and Vision Science (PDOCV) aims at offering training based on scientific research in Optometry and Vision Sciences. [+]

Top Part time PhDs in Optics and Photonics in Europe. Academic degree: PhD (Bologna 3rd cycle degree) ECTS: 180 Duration: 3 curricular years Regime: Normal Place: Gualtar Campus, Braga Main Scientific area: Optometry, Visual Optics The PhD Program in Optometry and Vision Science (PDOCV) aims at offering training based on scientific research in Optometry and Vision Sciences. The PDOCV is the only doctoral program of the kind in Portugal. It was accredited in 2013 by the National Agency of Accreditation (A3es) and joined the offer at the Bachelor and Master level. This is a research based learning project conducted by researchers internationally recognized in the scientific fields of the Programme. Research activities are developed in the Center of Physics of the University of Minho which is funded by the National Foundation for Research (FCT), the European Union and private companies operating in the area of vision care, ophthalmic instrumentation, optical companies and ophthalmological corporations. Careers The goal is to provide training to prepare professionals able to integrate multidisciplinar teams and to carry out internationally competitive research in the areas of clinical optometry, optometric instrumentation, contact lens practice, characterization of myopia and its evolution, low vision, colour vision, among others. These areas are very important from an applied point of view because their results contribute directly to the improvement of the visual quality of the population. On the other hand, this type of training is adequate for high level staff of companies in the area of vision, in the development activities... [-]

Needs for Novel Doctoral Training Strategies

The scientific, technological and economic importance of optics and photonics contrasts with its minor role in the German university system. The curricula of the traditional disciplines do not provide a profound optics and photonics education. Thus, the initial stages of diploma or doctoral theses have to serve as “training-on-the-job”, addressing only special aspects rather than the entire field of optics and photonics.

The leading graduate schools that specifically focus on optics and photonics are mainly located in the U.S. (e.g., CREOL, Orlando, Florida; Rochester, New York; Tucson, Arizona) and have developed into world renowned centers for science and technology. Importantly, the optics and photonics research at these institutions is complemented by corresponding undergraduate and graduate education programs. In this respect there is need of a new educational approach in Germany. Hence, we have developed and implemented both M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in the area of “Optics & Photonics”. The M.Sc. course provides an adequate education, spanning the bridge between undergraduate optics classes and the required in-depth knowledge that is essential for cutting-edge research. The best students enter the Ph.D. program and find the ideal ground for world-class research. Their thesis work benefits from the multidisciplinary character of the “Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics (KSOP)”.... [-]
