The most popular doctorate is the Doctor of Philosophy or Ph.D. Ph.D.s and other study doctorates prepare graduate student to launch new plans that add to the common knowledge base of the field. Candidates for and holders of Ph.D.s often seek professions as professors and researchers, but many also go on to different roles in the charitable, public, and private sectors.
Most Physics PhD programs cover all aspects of the subject from Condensed Matter, Atomic and Biological Physics on-campus while Astronomy, Particle Physics and Nuclear Physics are often located on large, shared international facilities due to the expensive equipment required for such research.

PhD in Physics
The graduate physics program at Koç University is carried on by our world reknowned faculty who specialize mainly on quantum theory and optics. All the research laboratories are state-of-the art. We publish papers in top journals on quantum gravity and astrophysics, atom-photon interactions, Bose-Einstein condensates, lasers and photonics. We admit mostly PhD students with full-scholarship. The MS program without thesis is recently introduced and may appeal to those who are not going to pursue an academic career. All our graduate students find the opportunity of close everyday contact in research with the world-class faculty. We encourage them to take courses from the other program sas well so that they can broaden their interests. We also get this way some of the brightest students at the university coming to the physics classes. Our graduates mostly continue as post-docs at the best universities in the world and eventually go to academic life. Others have no difficulty in finding jobs in business or industry. ... [-]

Our curricula are based on a solid foundation with a balanced coverage of theory and practice, and undergo frequent update to keep the content current. we have also been gradually increasing the use of English as the medium of instruction. Our mission is to train students to become IT professionals who are hardworking, responsible, and good team players, with the skills and capabilities to contribute to the development of our local and regional societies, and to be able to survive in the increasingly competitive global market. At FIT, students will not only gain knowledge but more importantly understand the principles and importance of life-long learning. [+]

Needs for Novel Doctoral Training Strategies
The scientific, technological and economic importance of optics and photonics contrasts with its minor role in the German university system. The curricula of the traditional disciplines do not provide a profound optics and photonics education. Thus, the initial stages of diploma or doctoral theses have to serve as “training-on-the-job”, addressing only special aspects rather than the entire field of optics and photonics.
The leading graduate schools that specifically focus on optics and photonics are mainly located in the U.S. (e.g., CREOL, Orlando, Florida; Rochester, New York; Tucson, Arizona) and have developed into world renowned centers for science and technology. Importantly, the optics and photonics research at these institutions is complemented by corresponding undergraduate and graduate education programs. In this respect there is need of a new educational approach in Germany. Hence, we have developed and implemented both M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in the area of “Optics & Photonics”. The M.Sc. course provides an adequate education, spanning the bridge between undergraduate optics classes and the required in-depth knowledge that is essential for cutting-edge research. The best students enter the Ph.D. program and find the ideal ground for world-class research. Their thesis work benefits from the multidisciplinary character of the “Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics (KSOP)”.... [-]
