Subject areas covered include: combined heat power systems cooling technologies heat power cycles energy storage eco-cities/smart cities sustainable building materials vehicles, transport and pollution control photovoltaic thermal systems; solar energy systems (e.g. solar powered cooling); wind energy solar water desalination systems sustainable waste management and disposal clean fossil fuel and carbon capture technologies This course requires a 2:1 or international equivalent and/or a masters at merit level or above in a relevant subject, and an IELTS level 6.0 (5.5 in each element). It is usually completed over a period of around three years. Facilities You will have access to computing facilities, complete with the software you will need, building technology laboratories and technical workshop, digital fabrication suite and model making workshop will provide you with additional tools for investigative analysis. The Marmont Centre for Renewable Energy contains research laboratories that are equipped with a variety of technologies including photovoltaic panels, solar collectors, light pipes, wind turbines and ground source heat pumps. Environmental engineering is the application of science and engineering to help improve the natural environment, seeking to facilitate the provision of healthy water, air and land. Research topics for this PhD are very varied but can include microwave processing, wastewater treatment, greenhouse gases, removal of pollutants in water and soils as well as many other aspects. This course requires a 2:1 or international equivalent and/or a masters at merit level or above in a relevant subject, and an IELTS level 6.0 (5.5 in each element). It is usually completed over a period of around three years. Facilities There are extensive laboratories with equipment from bench to pilot-plant scale. We are one of the few universities in the UK with access to mass spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy and a ‘virtual-reality’ suite where you can construct and optimise your own complete processing plant. It is awarded on the successful completion of a programme of supervised research and is assessed by a verbal examination and final thesis. This research theme focuses on the expertise developed within the School of Geography's Environment and Society research theme. Research by members of this theme focuses on topics at the environment-society interface in various geographical contexts and scales. Work in this research theme has been focused on four key areas: Sustainable rural and urban land management Farming, food and forestry The sustainable use and management of water Health and environment Theme members act as advisors to UK Government agencies, international agencies and development organisations and play leading roles in professional bodies (eg. SiLC and Geological Society) and learned societies (eg. RGS IBG). Postgraduate students are strongly integrated into our research, contributing across all areas of activity and reflecting the international scope of our work.
