Introduction
The PhD program in economics prepares you to conduct cutting-edge original research addressing the fundamental economic questions of our time. Learn the skills of leading economists, choose from many specializations, and develop your research program. You can utilize your knowledge in faculty positions in academia, in governmental organizations, as well as in the private sector.
Our PhD in Economics Program is now part of a cooperation agreement between CEU, the University of Vienna and the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

You will take courses taught by internationally recognized faculty with PhD degrees from some of the world’s leading universities, including Harvard, MIT, and Princeton. After choosing two fields of specialization, you will select an advisor from these faculty members to guide you as you hone your skills and develop your research program.

The Doctoral School in Economics at CEU was launched in 2000/2001. The program has been accredited in the US since the beginning; its Hungarian accreditation took place in 2005. Each year 7-8 students are admitted into the program. The language of teaching is English, and its structure and content follow the US standards. The Doctoral School provides up-to-date knowledge in economic theory, quantitative methods, and several applied fields. Quality education is assured by internationally recognized Faculty with research interests in many areas of economics. The program prepares the students for careers in education, research, and the public sector.
In the past few years, our PhD graduates have found work at renowned places like the National Bank of Hungary, the European Commission, IMF, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences/Institute of Economics, and McKinsey Consulting.

Admissions
Scholarships and Funding
CEU has an international reputation for high-quality postgraduate education delivered in a research-led environment. In pursuit of our mission, we strive to attract the very best graduates worldwide for our doctoral program. Candidates who apply by the financial aid deadline are automatically considered for the CEU Doctoral Scholarship, covering the full cost of tuition, complete with a monthly stipend to assist with housing and living costs.
Doctoral Stipend - 1,680 EUR/gross/month (=1,350 EUR/net/month for students who have no other taxable income)*
*PhD stipends are taxable in Austria. PhD students are considered new self-employed individuals in Austria, and they have to file their taxes and register at the national SVS insurance provider.
Housing
Doctoral students receive a monthly stipend to help with housing and living expenses. Each student is responsible for securing accommodation for themselves.
Please note: The CEU Doctoral Scholarship is awarded for a period of 48 months in total.
