Doctoral Program in Communication Studies

The objective of the Doctoral School of Social Communication operating since 2012 is the examination of issues of theoretical and applied communication, the clarification of the notion of communication, its role in society and its theoretical context, as well as the exploration of the sociological, socio/psychological, cultural, anthropological and ethological aspects of communication. The doctoral program furthermore extends to the complex examination of the social embeddedness of communication, functioning, and the cultural, political, economic, technological, and legal determinedness of the processes taking place in the media landscape.

The Doctoral School operates at the Faculty of Humanities of CUB and is supervised by the University Doctoral Council (UDC). The institutes of the faculty as well as other institutes, departments, and lecturers of the university are involved in the activities of the Doctoral School.

The objective of the Doctoral School of Social Communication operating since 2012 is the examination of issues of theoretical and applied communication, the clarification of the notion of communication, its role in society and its theoretical context, as well as the exploration of the sociological, socio/psychological, cultural, anthropological and ethological aspects of communication.

Evaluation criteria of the admission exam

During the admission procedure, the ranking of applicants is established by adding their scores obtained for the research portfolio and for the oral interview. Admission to the doctoral school is strictly based on the ranking list.

The admission committee grades applicants on a 100-point scale based on (a) their previous scientific achievements, (b) the submitted research portfolio, (c) the oral interview. The scores achieved in each of the three areas are calculated as an average of the points given by the members of the admission committee. (For the purposes of the final calculation the individual scores allocated in each of the categories are not considered any longer).

A maximum of 20 points may be received for previous scientific achievements/preparedness in three subcategories: 1. previous scientific work/practice/publication / proven involvement in scientific research; 2. professional-managerial practice 3. complex language exam of at least B2 level recognized by the state or equivalent in a second language.

A maximum of 40 points may be given for the research portfolio. Evaluation criteria: 1. the well-roundedness of the research topic, the presentation of the disciplinary context of the topic, its delineation, 2. research objective(s), choice of the proposed methodology, 3. the ability to critically analyze and synthesize literature, 4. scientific writing skills

A maximum of 40 points may be awarded at the oral interview, 10 with respect to each of the following criteria: 1. the development of the research problem (clear and coherent train of thoughts), the novelty, topicality of the approach, 2. the presentation of the disciplinary context, 3. evaluation of answers provided to the questions raised during the oral interview, 4. linguistic preparation

In order to be admitted, at least 67 points out of the total 100 must be achieved. The decision on admission is taken by the University Doctoral Council upon the proposal of the DSSC, having regard to the quotas defined by the National Doctoral Council as well as the budgetary framework allocated to the doctoral school for scholarships. In taking the decision, a departure from the ranking order established on the basis of the points achieved is only permitted if the budget of the doctoral school for Hungarian state scholarships is depleted and the candidate next in the ranking has requested admission only in case he/she is awarded the Hungarian state scholarship and he/she has reached two-thirds of the total score applying to admissions.

Eligibility criteria include the following:

University degree or an MA/MSc degree with honors (or equivalent) awarded in an accredited educational program as well as 300 credits obtained in either a single cycle or a two-stage university (undergraduate and graduate) education. Please note that non-master level MBA degrees are not accepted!

Applicants without previous studies in the relevant field (but who otherwise meet all the entrance requirements) can be admitted provided that they take a number of “bridging” subjects during the first semester of their studies and pass the relevant exams.

For students graduating in the 2019/2020 academic year, the deadline for presenting the certificates is 2 September 2020. Admission for the given year is only conditional until applicants are able to produce their certificates. Priority shall be given to applicants who have won a prize in the relevant subject at the National Conference of Scientific Students' Associations ("OTDK"). A further advantage is proven researcher capacity (e.g. OTD, scientific publications).

Proficiency in the English language is also a requirement. If the applicant does not have a language certificate in English, English knowledge should be proven in an interview organized by the Ph.D. Programme.

Admissions Option 2

Information with regard to self-financing and scholarship:

The doctoral education program is full-time and can be completed with state scholarship or through self-financing. The contents of the program are identical in both cases. All the students take part in the same courses, the only difference being in the form of financing. Students who are granted status with scholarship receive a state scholarship, the amount of which is HUF 140 680/month in semesters 1 to 4 and HUF 180 680/month in semesters 5 to 8. The relevant amounts are transferred to the student’s bank account by the University.

The following students are eligible for state scholarships:

Ph.D. students with Hungarian citizenship who apply for full-time education in an organized form.

foreign Ph.D. students who receive equivalent treatment with students of Hungarian citizenship on the basis of legislation or an international agreement.

The time period of the payment of the state doctoral scholarship is 4 years (48 months). The amount of the scholarship is set out in Act CCIV of 2011 on Higher Education. In accordance with the Act, whereas the majority of the educational costs of students with a scholarship is covered by the state budget, the costs of self-financed education are borne by the student.

During the program, all Ph.D. students may apply for funds to support their participation in conferences in Hungary and abroad.

For students to be admitted in 2020, tuition fees per semester for the 2020/21 academic year are as follows:

HUF 320 000 Hungarian-language program for Hungarian citizens and foreign (EU and EEA) enjoying equal treatment with Hungarians.

HUF 660 000 (regular tuition fee of HUF 320 000 + language contribution of HUF 340 000) English-language program for Hungarian citizens and foreign (EU and EEA) enjoying equal treatment with Hungarians.
