Introduction

The Ph.D. in Middle Eastern Languages Cultures at HLS will allow you to work with renowned IU faculty and prepare you to go on to an academic career at the university or college level. Our graduates develop a strong language foundation and expertise in this ever-critical region of the world.

The Ph.D. program consists of 90 credit hours of coursework from the Department of Middle Eastern Languages of Cultures, as well as approved related departments. Additionally, you will select a minor in an outside department or program to complement your research interests.

The Ph.D. program culminates in written and oral exams, as well as a dissertation. Developing language expertise is a core part of the Ph.D. program. Three non-English languages are required--a major MELC language (normally Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish), a minor MELC language, and a European research language (such as French, German, or Spanish).
