Introduction

Why Particle Physics and Accelerator Technologies at RTU?

The Department of Material Science and Applied Chemistry at Riga Technical University is dedicated to preparing students for a wide range of careers in physics and the related accelerator technology fields by providing the fundamental knowledge and technical expertise necessary to advance their careers and to perform cutting-edge and internationally recognized research.

RTU&rsquo's Particle Physics and Accelerator Technologies doctoral program enables students to focus on the fundamental building blocks of our universe – searching for answers to the biggest questions by studying the smallest particles and their fundamental interactions.

RTU is home to a vibrant and supportive physics research community. From our strong connections, you will have a range of opportunities to meet other researchers, discuss your work, and learn about the cutting-edge projects being carried out by academics within the University and at other institutions.

Our students come from all over the world and from varied educational backgrounds. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment and attracting the widest possible range of talents.

Program Overview

Particle Physics covers a wide range of topics from the study of new particles produced at high-energy accelerators to neutrinos, dark matter, and dark energy in the Universe and experiments are carried out at facilities around the world.

The overarching goal of the Particle Physics and Accelerator Technologies doctoral program is to prepare world-class specialists in fields of high-energy particle physics, accelerator technologies, and other closely related disciplines, such as particle detector technologies and accelerator physics.

During their academic journey, students will acquire a strong understanding of the theory of their respective study direction— allowing them to successfully perform scientific research in their chosen field of study.

They will also demonstrate the creation and interpretation of new knowledge, through original research or other advanced scholarship, of a quality to satisfy peer review, extend the forefront of the discipline, and merit publication.

Graduates will have substantial skills in data analysis, as well as high-level skills in computing, programming, and/or computer-aided design.

In addition, students will have the opportunity to spend an extended amount of time at an appropriate scientific laboratory, such as a long-term attachment (LTA) at CERN.

Degree offered: Doctor of Science in Natural Sciences or Engineering and Technology.
