Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering (Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering) provides students with a unique opportunity to demonstrate innovation in a wide range of electrical engineering research areas. The Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering degree is awarded to candidates who successfully complete a program of advanced courses, qualification and research requirements, and dissertation defense. Students are expected to carry out an independent investigation in an electrical engineering research area under the supervision of experienced researchers. Graduates of the program are anticipated to meet the challenges in the electrical engineering discipline and provide innovative solutions based on the most recent developments in electrical engineering.

Program Objectives

  • Offer a rigorous and innovative engineering education that promotes innovative research in engineering areas related to national priorities.
  • Prepare graduates to be inquisitive, to reason critically, and to lead nationally and globally.
  • Contribute to the advancement of the UAE knowledge-based economy and quality of life through community engagement, knowledge transfer, and industry partnership.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Identify gaps in the current state of knowledge and outline directions to produce new knowledge at the frontier of the electrical engineering discipline.
  • Apply advanced theories and research methodologies to critically analyze open research problems in electrical engineering and develop innovative solutions.
  • Produce and defend an original research work that advances the state of the art in the electrical engineering discipline.
  • Communicate research findings, orally and in writing, at a high level of proficiency to faculty, peers, and the lay public.
  • Evaluate and manage complex professional engineering activities and diverse ethical issues within the work context.

Ph.D. Scholarship (All Nationalities) Full-Time

The purpose of the “Ph.D. Scholarship” is to recruit high-achieving graduate students in certain majors at UAEU and provide them with full and continuous financial support to pursue their graduate studies at UAEU.

Student Eligibility

  • Have a GPA ≥ 3.5/4.0 in Master degree.
  • A score of 6.5 or higher on the IELTS Academic exam or equivalent.
  • Have no employment or other financial sponsorship.
  • Have a dissertation in one of the UAE priority sectors(Renewable Energy, Transportation, Education, Health, Water, Technology, Space).
  • Meet the Ph.D. admission requirements.

Benefits

  • Full tuition waiver.
  • Monthly Stipend.
  • Health insurance (if needed).
  • Extra Bonus:
    • Up to AED 3,000 from supervisor’s external research project, or
    • Up to AED 2,000 from supervisor’s internal research project.

Duration

4 years

Duties and Expectations

  • Maintain GPA of ≥ 3.3 at the Ph.D. level.
  • Be enrolled full-time (minimum of 9 credits/semester) at the Ph.D. level.
  • Be available at UAEU full-time.
  • Commit to a minimum of 40 hours/week as the following:
    • During the first 3 semesters of active enrollment: 35 hours/week on courses and/or research project + 5 hours/week as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) or Graduate Administrative Assistant (GAA).
    • After 3 semesters of active enrollment: 30 hours/week on courses and/or research project + 10 hours/week as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) or Graduate Administrative Assistant (GAA).

Ph.D. Fellowship (All Nationalities) Full-Time

The purpose of the “Ph.D. Fellowship” is to recruit high-achieving graduate students in certain majors at UAEU and provide them with full and continuous financial support to pursue their graduate studies at UAEU.

Student Eligibility

  • Have a GPA ≥ 3.3/4.0 in Master degree.
  • A score of 6.5 or higher on the IELTS Academic exam or equivalent.

  • Additional work (optional) as Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) or Graduate Administrative Assistant (GAA) up to 20 hours per week upon availability by the College or College of Graduate Studies (up to AED 4,000).
  • Extra Bonus:
    • Up to AED 3,000 from supervisor’s external research project, or
    • Up to AED 2,000 from supervisor’s internal research project.

The purpose of the “Ph.D. Tuition Payer” option is to recruit high-achieving graduate students who are employed and wish to pursue their graduate studies at UAEU on a part-time basis.

Student Eligibility

  • Have a GPA ≥ 3.0/4.0 in Master degree.
  • Pay the tuition fees of the Ph.D. program.
  • Prefer to have the dissertation in one of the UAE priority sectors(Renewable Energy, Transportation, Education, Health, Water, Technology, Space).
  • Meet the Ph.D. admission requirements.

Benefits

  • Optional work as Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) or Graduate Administrative Assistant (GAA) up to 10 hours per week upon availability by College or College of Graduate Studies (up to AED 2,000).
  • Extra Bonus:
    • Up to AED 3,000 from supervisor’s external research project, or
    • Up to AED 2,000 from supervisor’s internal research project.

Duration

4 - 6 years

Duties and Expectations

  • Maintain a GPA of ≥ 3.0 at the Ph.D. level.
  • Be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits/semester.
  • The applicant can be an employee and work outside of UAE University.
  • The applicant can have external financial sponsorship from any organization.

Merit Fellowship Award

To receive the Merit Award, students are expected to have high academic credentials and maintain their academic success at the UAEU. The Merit Fellowship Award offers financial assistance in form of a partial tuition waiver to qualified students. Students in STEM and strategic areas of the country (renewable energy, transportation, health, water resources, technology, space) will have priority.

Student Eligibility:

  • Have Excellent Academic Standing (GPA ≥ 3.6/4.0).
  • Maintain a GPA ≥3.6/4.0 during study at UAEU.
  • Have no other financial sponsorship or award.

Benefits:

  • 50% discount on tuition fees.

Duration:

  • Valid until graduation as long as the student is abiding with the Student Eligibility conditions.
