The general requirement for access and admission to the Doctorate

In general, for access to an official doctoral program, it will be necessary to be in possession of the official Spanish titles of Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent, and Master's Degree or equivalent, provided that at least 300 ECTS credits have been passed in the set of these two teachings.

Likewise, those who are in any of the following cases may access:  

Be in possession of an official Spanish university degree, or from another country that is part of the European Higher Education Area, which qualifies for access to a Master's degree in accordance with the provisions of article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of October 29, and have passed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits in the set of official university studies, of which at least 60 must be at the Master's level.

Be in possession of an official Spanish degree of Graduate or Graduate, whose duration, in accordance with community law regulations, is at least 300 ECTS credits. Said graduates must take the complementary training referred to in article 7.2 of this standard unless the study plan of the corresponding undergraduate degree includes research training credits, equivalent in formative value to the research credits from Master's studies.

University graduates who, after obtaining a place in training in the corresponding entrance test to specialized health training places, have passed with a positive evaluation at least two years of training in a program to obtain the official degree in any of the specialties in Health Sciences.

Being in possession of a degree obtained in accordance with foreign educational systems, without the need for its homologation, after verification by the university that it accredits a level of training equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's Degree and that it authorizes access to doctoral studies in the country issuing the degree. This admission will not imply, in any case, the homologation of the previous degree held by the interested party or its recognition for other purposes than access to Doctorate studies.

Being in possession of another Spanish Ph.D. degree obtained in accordance with previous university regulations.

Be in possession of an official university degree that has obtained the correspondence to level 3 of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education, in accordance with the procedure established in Royal Decree 967/2014, of November 21, which establishes the requirements and the procedure for the homologation and declaration of equivalence to the official university degree and academic level and for the validation of foreign Higher Education studies, and the procedure to determine the correspondence to the levels of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education of the official titles of Architect, Engineer, Graduate, Technical Architect, Technical Engineer, and Diploma.

The second additional provision, section 2, of Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, also establishes that graduates, architects, or engineers who are in possession of the Advanced Studies Diploma obtained in accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 778/1998, of April 30, or have reached the research adequacy regulated in Royal Decree, may be admitted to doctoral studies, regulated by the Royal Decree of reference. Decree 185/1985, of January 23.

Likewise, article 7 of the regulations governing doctoral studies, approved by the Governing Council of Rey Juan Carlos University, specifies the access requirements for the following cases.

Access to foreign university degrees without homologation

Spanish or foreign students who, while in possession of qualifications obtained at a foreign University or higher education center, wish to pursue Third Cycle studies at the Rey Juan Carlos University, may access them without the need for their qualifications to be previously homologated, in accordance with the following provisions:

Submit the degree or degrees obtained at your home university, duly legalized.

Submit academic certification stating the subjects taken with the grades obtained, as well as the years and subjects that make up said degree (also legalized).

In the event that the source language of the documentation is not Spanish, a translation of the university degree and academic certification must also be attached, made by an official translator.

In no case will this access to third-cycle studies imply the approval of the foreign degree held by the interested party, nor the recognition of the same for other purposes than that of taking the indicated third-cycle university studies.

Access to approved foreign university degrees

Students with a foreign title approved by the Ministry of Education and Culture with the corresponding Spanish degree of graduate, engineer, or architect, will be subject to the provisions of section 2 a. of article 7 of the regulations governing doctoral studies, which says: that those who are in the following case may also access:

Being in possession of an official Spanish university degree, or from another country that is part of the European Higher Education Area, which enables access to a Master's degree in accordance with the provisions of article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of October 29 and have passed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits in the set of official university studies, of which at least 60 must be at the Master's level.

Regarding admission to doctoral programs, article 8 of the regulations governing doctoral studies, approved by the Governing Council of Rey Juan Carlos University establishes that:

Applicants may request admission to any doctoral program related or not to their university curriculum.

The Academic Committees of the doctoral programs may determine additional requirements and criteria for the selection and admission of students to a specific doctoral program. In the case of applicants for doctoral programs not directly related to their university curriculum, the Academic Committee will decide whether or not admission is appropriate.

Admission to doctoral programs may include the requirement of specific training complements. Said specific training supplements will not require their structuring in ECTS credits and will, for the purposes of public prices and the granting of scholarships and study aids, be considered doctoral-level training and their development will not compute for the purposes of the limit established in article 3.2. of RD 99/2011 on the duration of doctoral studies.

The Academic Committee, in addition to the general requirements of the Program and the characteristics detailed in the "Access Profile" set out in the Report, will meet the following criteria:

For this doctoral program, there is no type of special entrance test that the applicant must take.

The Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program reserves, however, the possibility of requesting a personal interview to verify the degree of compliance with the general and specific requirements of the program, the characteristics defined in the access profile, the requirements related to the Minimum level of Spanish language, in the case of non-Spanish speaking students (level C2) and foreign language (level B1 or higher, according to the requirements of the research).
