The Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering program is directed at students hoping to pursue a research career in academia, industry or national labs. Carrying out research in state-of-the-art facilities and routinely crossing disciplinary lines, our Ph.D. students work with world-class faculty on complex problems and make discoveries that will change the world.

Scholarships and Funding
Through the Grainger Engineering Five-Year Ph.D. Funding Guarantee, Ph.D. students in their first five years of enrollment are guaranteed a funded appointment for fall and spring that includes a full tuition waiver and stipend.
MatSE graduate students are also encouraged to seek out fellowships and assistantships through our department and various partners.

Curriculum
Our curriculum is flexible and easily tailored to support research in all areas of materials and individual interests. Most of our Ph.D. students are able to complete their coursework requirements within about 2 years and focus on their innovative thesis research.
