About Engineering
Since offering its first classes in 1964, Herff College has developed a reputation for excellent instruction. Over 50 dedicated faculty members with outstanding academic and professional credentials comprise the College enabling us to offer a variety of graduate degree programs. Within our five academic departments, we offer MS and PhD degree programs and many exciting activities and services that enrich or smooth the path to an engineering degree.
Two Doctor of Philosophy degrees are offered in the Herff College of Engineering: Biomedical Engineering, a joint program between UofM and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center; and Engineering, featuring an interdepartmental curriculum with concentrations across the college.
Research Assistantships and tuition waivers are available to graduate students on a competitive basis and are renewable annually.

What is the curriculum?
Biomedical Engineering
The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Memphis and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, participate in the Joint Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering. The Joint Program offers graduate-level coursework leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering.
Mechanical Engineering
The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers courses of study that are components of the interdepartmental curriculum leading to the Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering degree with a Mechanical Engineering Concentration. All those cool things you read about, like establishing colonies on the moon and Mars, 3-D printing of biomedical implants or building the next-generation aircraft and automobile engines? They're all happening right here in this department. Build medical devices. Create renewable energy systems—wind and solar. Design and test new aerospace engines and propulsion systems. Get your feet wet testing turbines in the Mississippi River. The possibilities are endless.
Civil Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering will help you dive deep into big-picture thinking. Because around here, "good enough" isn't good enough. We don't want you to reduce pollution, we want you to reduce pollution and improve roadways at the same time. Right now, we're designing structures to withstand natural disasters and save countless lives. This department offers graduate-level courses that act as components to the interdepartmental curriculum for the Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering degree with a Civil Engineering Concentration. Research opportunities are available in the areas of environmental engineering, engineering seismology, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, and water resources engineering.
Electrical and Computer Engineering
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering puts you on the front lines of the digital revolution. Design devices and develop sustainable energy. Find ways to identify someone more accurately than their fingerprint. We're even working on ways to capture brain waves and revolutionize the way we teach and learn. It's not science fiction. It's real, and it's happening right now. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers graduate level courses that act as components to the interdepartmental curriculum for the Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering degree with a Computer Engineering Concentration and a Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering with an Electrical Engineering Concentration.
