Introduction

Postgraduate Doctoral Study in Economics and Business Economics

The doctoral study program in Economics and Business Economics of the Faculty of Economics in Rijeka is a member of the two prestigious doctoral networks/associations: Central and South-Eastern European Ph.D. Network (CESEENET) and European Doctoral Association in Management and Business Administration (EDAMBA). This enables our students to be additionally included in student exchange, and participate in distinguished summer schools and workshops. Besides our professors, distinguished foreign professors have engaged in the program also and our doctoral candidates could pick up their supervisors from high-quality professors from all around the world.

The foundation of any high-quality doctoral study program is the research capacity of the Faculty, which is documented by the following research facts and figures (2017/2018):

  • more than 100 papers published in scientific journals indexed in databases WoS and Scopus
  • about 300 published in journals listed by the Croatian Ministry of Science and Education;
  • more than 220 papers published by EFRI Ph.D. students
  • 7 research projects funded by EU teams
  • 5 research projects funded by Croatian Science Foundation
  • 24 research projects funded by University Science Foundation
  • 73 faculty and staff members involved in fundamental and applied research;
  • about 100 conferences where EFRI faculty took part
  • 16 books published
  • increase in external funding of research projects: 50%
  • more than 100 Ph.D. and Postdoc students
  • about 40 Ph.D. students included in full-time research
  • 22 Ph.D. thesis resulted from funded research projects

A very important segment of EFRI's activity is dedicated to publishing. It continuously edits the Proceedings of Rijeka Faculty of Economics – Journal of Economics and Business, published continuously ever since 1971 as a scientific publication of the Institution. The Journal is focused on articles dealing with economic theory and economic policies and is indexed in the most popular bibliographic databases such as JEL, EconLit, IBSS, CAB Abstracts, SSCI, JCR, ProQuest, Scopus, and EBSCO.

The Faculty has high-quality research resources in line with the requirements of the scientific discipline in which the doctoral study program is delivered. The Faculty has a large computer classroom in the old building and 3 computer rooms in the main building suitable for research, because of the accessibility of the computer programs that the Faculty acquired from its own resources. In fact, the Faculty is the only one in the region that has a database Amadeus, Bureau van Dijk, which includes a wide range of business data for about 21 million businesses covering the whole of Europe. With the procurement of the statistical package Statistica, the Faculty has obtained an unlimited number of licenses and thus, it is available for installation on the personal computers of doctoral candidates. Faculty also provides access to other programs for statistical and econometric data processing such as Stata, EViews, DEA Solver Pro, LISREL, RATS, etc. Computer Centre administers the local network, computing infrastructure, and the Croatian Academic and Research Network CARNet.

Data on our library holdings (as of January 1, 2017) are as follows:

  • Number of monograph publications 51,644
  • Number of journal titles 23,895
  • Number of doctoral dissertations 923
  • Number of Masters' theses 681
  • Number of Specialist Masters’ theses 286

The Faculty is subscribed to or obtains free of charge 57 foreign and 83 domestic journals. With the electronic publication of books and journals, the number of available journals within the library significantly increased. The entire library holdings are accessible and visible in the online library catalog. In addition, users may search the library holdings on their own computers and receive data on available literature. Certain modules within the program of loan, categorization, statistics of control, and overdue slips along with inter-library loans are well developed. The Portal of electronic sources for the Croatian academic community - Portal of the National and University Library in Zagreb provides accessibility to the most important world databases with the national license - bibliographical, citation, and databases with entire texts as well as online journals. It includes large bibliographic database services and databases such as EBSCOhost and Web of Knowledge as well as individual bibliographic databases such as Scopus and services for electronic journals of large and renowned publishers: ScienceDirect, SpringerVerlag, Wiley-Blackwell, MathSciNet, and others.

Moreover, the University of Rijeka is home to the largest supercomputer in the region (ranked 32nd in the world among the supercomputers used for scientific research). The Bura supercomputer is based on Bull DLC B720 water-cooled servers. It consists of 288 nodes, each node containing two Intel Xeon E5-2690 v3 processors, for a system with a total of 6912 processor cores, and a total output of 239.64 Teraflops (Rmax). The supercomputer has over 18 terabytes of RAM and disk systems capacities of 850 terabytes. The Mellanox InfiniBand FDR 56GB network system ensures rapid communication between components of the Bura supercomputer cluster.

Rijeka University’s new data center is the only one of its kind in the region that offers a direct water-cooling system with warm water up to 40°C. The BURA is a “green” computer according to testing performed by Green 500, placing it at the 175th position worldwide.

Our doctoral students during a three-year two-track (Economic and Business) research-oriented program with only six courses (one-half of them being electives) and active participation in international conferences, workshops, and colloquia as well as stay at foreign universities and paper publishing in prestigious international journals acquire the highest level of competences, which relate to the creation and evaluation of new concepts, methods, principles, and theories in the field of scientific research that extends the boundaries of known knowledge. They also develop social skills and independence and responsibility in their work. They are included in the scientific projects led by our professors as well as receive additional funding for staying abroad, high-quality conferences, workshops, and paper publishing.

They are employed at prestigious national institutions and companies as experts, top managers or advisors as well as teaching and research staff.
