Early career university researchers from Australia and Germany are amping up their collaborative efforts thanks to the Australia-Germany Joint Research Cooperation Scheme. Now comes news of $2.7 million in funding for two projects -- one for customized 3D bone implants and the other for low-cost dental disease detection. Building Global Partnerships
A partnership between Universities Australia and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Australia-Germany Joint Research Cooperation Scheme has awarded nearly $12 million in grants for 316 projects since 2015. In doing so, it brings together young researchers from approximately 30 Australian universities and their German university counterparts.
Universities Australia explains, “The scheme supports exchanges for Australian researchers to spend time at partner institutions in Germany and for collaborating German researchers to spend time at Australian universities. Researchers must be working on a joint research project with their German counterparts, rather than simply furthering their own individual research in Germany. The inclusion of early career researchers is a significant focus of this scheme.”
Addressing Global Challenges
The overarching goal of the program is to spur progress toward the development of solutions for major challenges facing these countries. Universities Australia Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said, “The connections that are forged between these researchers — at the very early stages of their careers — can lead to new knowledge and products down the line.”
According to Jackson, the projects often receive additional support from other national and international funding bodies, such as the Australian Research Council.
“Having more than 70 projects funded this year is a testament to the quality of the research projects involved. Australia leverages more funds through this German program than the US and the UK,” Jackson added.
