UWC History & Founding Ideas In the turbulent world of the 21st century, UWC’s aims and objectives are as relevant today as they were in 1962 – perhaps even more so. UWC was founded in 1962 when Atlantic College in South Wales, UK admitted its first students. At a time when the Cold War was at its height, the aim was to bring together young people from different nations to act as champions of peace through an education based on shared learning, collaboration, and understanding. UWC’s educational concept was based on the ideas of German educationalist Kurt Hahn, one of the founding fathers of the UWC movement. Hahn believed that school should be a preparation for life, not just for university, and that education should help students to develop resilience and the ability to cope with failure as well as with success. Hahn was a pioneer in education, some of his earlier initiatives having included Salem School in Germany and Outward Bound. Then, in 1958, while attending a conference at the NATO Staff College, he was inspired by the cooperation he witnessed between former adversaries from World War II. He thought that if we could educate young people from around the world together, we could prevent future conflicts. From this belief in the power of education to change the world, the UWC movement was born, with a mission to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. BEING A PILOT Being a pilot is demanding and exciting, and many decisions have to be made both prior to and during a flight. Pilots must, therefore, be well educated and prepared for the tasks awaiting them. Passenger aeroplanes are always flown with two pilots: A captain and a first officer. They cooperate to complete tasks in the cockpit during a flight. Pilots usually start their work an hour before the flight is scheduled to depart. They plan the route to be flown, evaluate the weather, calculate fuel requirements, and do a weight and balance calculation. Together with the rest of the crew they also complete many other preparatory tasks before the flight commences. During the flight, the captain and first officer share tasks. In addition to controlling the aeroplane, they must navigate, read checklists, receive clearances from air traffic control, and inform passengers about the flight. Before landing, the approach and landing at the destination need to be planned, and pilots must take aircraft weight, other traffic and weather into consideration. They make their final decision and calculations based on information received on approaching the airport. The theory lessons are conducted in modern classrooms with new SmartBoards. The aircraft are new and highly modern with advanced instrumentation. We have state-of-the-art flight simulators, one of which is a Boeing 737NG simulator. The school is open for our students 24/7, and the students use the school both on weekdays and weekends. We have a lively and active student environment. Our briefing room is a meeting place for students and instructors and is also the “headquarters” for planning domestic and foreign flights and for exchanging experience and knowledge. COURSE PLAN At Pilot Flight Academy, training is split into two: Alternating weeks of theory and flying. The theory weeks consist of six hours’ instruction, and during the weeks of flying, the students fly the school’s aeroplanes. Flight training for the students begins early in the program, and the students have usually acquired enough knowledge to be able to fly solo already towards the end of the first semester! An international flight training program at Pilot Flight School consists of 915 hours of high-quality classroom instruction on ATPL(A) level, the most advanced certificate for airline pilots. Alongside the theory instruction, students will learn basic visual and instrument flying at first and later progress to advanced instrument flying in the school’s twin-engined aeroplanes. Towards the end of the course, students will go through simulator training where they learn the demanding task of crew cooperation during stressful situations. Spring semester starts first whole week of January and continues throughout June. Fall semester starts first whole week of August and continues to the app. December 20th. There is Easter holiday, four weeks of summer holiday and two weeks of Christmas holiday during the school year. TEACHING AND LEARNING At Pilot Flight Academy we urge to conduct the education as close up to reality for the pilot profession as possible. WHAT IS ACN? Our college offers students 30 credits (one year – equivalent to 60 “studiepoeng” in the Norwegian system) in the American university system as part of a US Bachelor’s Degree. ACN’s cooperative partners are: University of North Dakota (UND) in Grand Forks, North Dakota West Chester University (WCU) in West Chester, Pennsylvania Adelphi University (AU) in Garden City, New York. In addition, with the credits gained from ACN, students can choose to apply to the university of their choice in the US. When students successfully complete the courses at ACN, they can be eligible for transfer to UND, WCU, AU or SNHU as a Junior (third year) student. While at ACN they gain an excellent understanding of the American university system, build a network of student and faculty contacts (both Norwegian and American) and can then make a smooth transition into the university system. ACN helps students with practical and bureaucratic details so they can concentrate more on their studies and their transition will be smooth. The close cooperation with these universities enables ACN to host American professors each semester. The vast majority of Norwegian students return to Norway to pursue careers in their area of study. Past students report that they have been stronger candidates in job interviews because of their international study experience. In the past, ACN students have received degrees in a wide range of areas, but especially popular are: Communications – Media, Broadcasting, Journalism, PR., Peace Studies, Aerospace and all area of Business. They leave Norway with a special fondness for the country, the people, and the college. HISTORY OF ACN The American College of Norway has celebrated more than 25 academic years. It was founded in 1990 by Dr. Steinar Opstad, a former Vice President of NHO, the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise. In 1992, ACN began with 12 Norwegian and 12 American students coming together to study in a quaint farm mansion on the island of Jeløy in Moss, Østfold, Norway. Throughout the years the program has expanded to 70 students from Norway, the United States, and countries from all over the world. ACN is now located in the beautiful Convention Building (Konvensjonsgaarden), downtown Moss, near the public library, cafes, shopping, and nightlife. Why ACN? There are a variety of reasons that students begin their education at the American College of Norway. Studying at ACN allow students to receive 30 credits (one year) toward your Bachelor’s degree, which will enable you to start as a third year (junior) at our cooperative partners' university in the US. Second, ACN offers a gradual introduction into the American university system. The class structure and social networks of American universities are quite different than those at Norwegian colleges and universities. Students are eased into new ways of doing things and are better prepared for their studies at an American university. ACN gives students the opportunity to improve their English reading, writing, comprehension and speaking skills. While students must be fluent to be admitted to ACN, most report that after a year here their English skills have vastly improved. This prepares students for greater success throughout their studies. The staff is equipped to assist students with various non-academic aspects of preparing to study in the United States such as applying to schools, finding housing, and applying for a visa. This assistance is invaluable, and with our help, your journey to the US can be much less stressful. Last, ACN is fun! Students form a close-knit group of friends they otherwise would not have met.Throughout the year there are countless activities for students, both inside and outside of school.
