Introduction

The School of Engineering is active in traditional fields of Engineering, as well as in emerging and unique areas at national level. It is characterised by a strong research component, the excellence of its teaching projects, internationalisation and interaction with society. It is supported by a faculty of more than 300 doctorate professors, approximately 400 researchers and a staff of more than 90 technical and administrative employees.

There are eleven research centres, 70% of which have been classified as Very Good or Excellent. These are internationally recognised centres thanks to the various awards attributed to professors and researchers of the School of Engineering and to important research partnerships with national and international universities. The collaboration with MIT, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Texas at Austin, under the Portugal_MIT and Portugal_CMU / AT programmes, is also noteworthy.

Thanks to International Mobility programmes such as Erasmus Mundus, teaching projects have a very high demand at national and international levels. There are approximately 6.000 students of the different cycles of studies, with around 700 belonging to the 3rd cycle.

The School of Engineering is oriented toward Society, where the relevance of its action is evident in numerous partnerships with national and international companies.

Doctoral Programme in Management and Waste Treatment The doctoral program in Management and Waste Treatment (PDGTR) consists of a curricular component and the elaboration of a thesis, a total of 180 ECTS, of which 110 are related to the dissertation and the 70 courses. It is a teaching inter-research centers of the School of the University of Minho project (EEUM), involving the Territory Engineering Centers, Environment and Construction (C-TAC) of Mechanical and Materials Technologies (CT2M) Institute polymers and Composites (IPC) and Biological Engineering (CEB). The purpose of PDGTR is to provide specialized training to develop in students the ability to contribute to the advancement of processes and treatment technologies and waste recovery through creative and independent research. The structuring objective is to promote excellence and research in the field of treatment and recovery of waste, with emphasis on the search for new solutions and the corresponding design and modeling, the optimization of existing solutions and the most efficient operation of treatment facilities, as well as the integration of associated technologies, to reduce negative environmental impacts. Doctoral Program in Sustainable Built Environment The built environment has evolved to frame and facilitate nearly all human activities. Simultaneously, its constant expansion has become more and more harmful to the natural environment. The construction sector accounts for an estimated 40% of earth resources consumption and, therefore, has a crucial role to play in achieving sustainability. Urban development has special importance within the broader context of sustainability as well, while current trends predict that the number of urban dwellers will keep rising, reaching almost 5 billion by 2030 out of a world total of 8.1 billion.
